Growing up Game – Response

My first thought was “that is a lot of meat”. The hesitation she feels towards the hippies and the health-crazed is very understandable. Game, though, is very healthy and fair in comparison to processed foods. The reference to “you are what you eat” is a concept that more people should look in to. Most do not put an ounce of thought into their burgers and fast food. Farm animals may lead sad lives, but vegetarians are overzealous with their diets. Putting effort into giving back to the food chain is what makes you earn your part in it. Brenda states that “the hunter must earn me”.  That does not mean people have the agility of deer, they just should understand what the relationship the environment is around them. Brenda’s thanks for the doe in the back of the station wagon is the link of understanding in her particular relationship. Her father would always say “Nothing wasted” and her family would use the furs for clothing.

Her life is not something commonly experienced these days but we all at least have the morals to not eat our pets such as Brenda’s poor “Bo-Peep”. (However, some people do eat dogs.) I have never heard of sausage cookies and I am sure most of America hasn’t either unless they have ties to other parts of the world. It makes me wonder if money-spoiled people ever think about what they are eating. Brenda’s house friends did not know the difference between the moose and beef. If not consider so exotic, rattlesnake could easily be served in as many varieties as chicken. Lets not forget frog legs as well, “tastes just like chicken!” (one of my favorites!)
